Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent and the beginning of the six weeks of prayer and abstinence before Easter.
This year, join us at St Peter’s as we mark the occasion with a solemn evening service. Repentance ashes will be placed on the foreheads of participants. The service symbolises a turning away from the world, and towards God, before the celebration of Easter.
In the words of T.S. Eliot’s great religious poem, Ash Wednesday:
Because I do not hope to turn again
Because I do not hope
Because I do not hope to turn
Desiring this man’s gift and that man’s scope
I no longer strive to strive towards such things
