St Peter’s Crypt will again house the Winter Night Shelter, overnight every Monday night to Tuesday morning in January, February and March 2020.
We provide company, warmth, an evening meal, showers, bed and breakfast for between 15 and 20 guests: people who are homeless. We also provide a great sense of community for our volunteers.
Reaching out to the wider community through partnership is central to St Peter’s values and the Night Shelter reflects this. Other churches in the neighbourhood offer the same hospitality on different nights of the week.
We are largely dependent upon volunteers.
Volunteers can choose from a variety of tasks.
However, please be aware that we have a very experienced team of volunteers who serve the evening meal and socialize with guests and that this is also true of the breakfast team. There are vacancies on both teams each year, but not many.
We are always on the look-out for people who will cook meals, set up the Crypt for the guests, stay overnight and clean up in the mornings.
There are two roles that depend on volunteers having specialist ‘equipment’ and circumstances.
a) Washing guests’ clothes, for which volunteers will need to have a washing machine and effective dryer – this service has to be done between 7.30 pm and 8.00 am
b) Taking sheets, towels etc to the launderette for which volunteers will have to have a car and be free on Tuesday morning and during the daytime on another weekday, preferably Wednesday. Launderette expenses are paid.
Volunteers must be over 18, although we can arrange supervising of younger people setting up and serving meals.
This year, we are trying a new idea for staying overnight. Nights can be long and lonely while guests are asleep. We need at least two people, male and female, to stay overnight and one of them MUST be awake for some of the night. We are going to try having some groups of volunteers, maximum 4 people, of both sexes, but these will need to be quiet groups, because our guests need their sleep!
If you would like to help some evenings or mornings, please contact us at email@example.com
You would not need to help every week, nor would you be working on your own. There is lots of support and your help would be greatly appreciated.
