Mark 4.26-34

Gospel

Mark 4.26-34

Such a large crowd gathered around Jesus that he got into a boat and began to teach them using many parables. Jesus said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’

He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’

With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.

Intercessions

We pray for our church of St Peter de Beauvoir and for all the people, clergy and lay, who have helped this church to continue its tradition of spirituality and social responsibility.  We pray especially for those who are working towards the choice of a new vicar.  We pray that each of us may be strengthened by the community of the church and that each of us will do all we can to support that community.

Lord, in the silence, hear our prayer.

In times when we are near our limits, we are tempted to take the path of denial and numbness, with our heads in the sand and our eyes closed.  As the G7 meet in Cornwall, help us and all the politicians there remember that every one of us is part of one world.

Lord, in the silence, hear our prayer.

We pray for the sick in body, mind or spirit and for those who support them.  We give thanks for health professionals who have worked to their limits in the past months and for scientists who have found new treatments and vaccines.

Lord, in the silence, hear our prayer.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world, a light which no darkness can quench. We remember before God all those who have died and those who mourn them, and those whose ‘year’s mind’ falls at this time, including James Franklin, Alice Hackett, Maud Shepherd, Ethel Harvey, Ruth Govender and Abigail Mullen.

Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord and may light perpetual shine upon them.

Be with us all, Lord, as we try to live this next week and the weeks to come in Your name.

Merciful Father accept these prayers for the sake of your son, Our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Amen.
